Lord Jacob Rothschild, a prominent banker and philanthropist known for breaking away from the Rothschild banking dynasty to create his own financial empire, passed away at the age of 87. Born in 1936, Rothschild left N.M. Rothschild & Sons Ltd. in 1980 after a dispute about the firm’s direction and focused on developing businesses such as RIT Capital Partners Plc, one of the UK’s largest investment trusts. Along with RIT, he co-founded St. James’s Place Plc and was involved in various high-profile financial endeavors throughout his career.

Rothschild was also known for his philanthropic efforts, serving as chairman of the National Gallery and the National Heritage Lottery Fund. An art collector himself, he oversaw the restoration of notable landmarks such as Spencer House and Waddesdon Manor. His legacy as a financier, art enthusiast, and environmentalist has left a lasting impact on the financial and cultural landscape of London.
